Fibroids: Time to Operate

There was no turning back once I decided to proceed with surgery. It actually felt like a weight had been lifted. Fear had been removed. An open abdominal myomectomy was my safest option due to the extent of the fibroids and the desire to preserve the integrity of my uterus.

I researched what the surgery entailed, but I didn’t allow myself to become overwhelmed. My physician made the expectations very clear, and answered all my questions. I read discussion boards with women sharing their experiences. Some in hopes of conceiving found that the surgery allowed them to achieve that dream. Others were in the space of coming to terms with new fibroid growths. Women were supportive, encouraging, and available to express themselves in a space free of judgment. This inspired me.

We were at the end of September and I’d ask for a date in October. Due to obvious time constraints and scheduling, that wasn’t feasible but we settled on November 28, 2018. My OB/GYN came in to go over a few details before surgery, and I can also recall being introduced to the anesthesiologist. My parents were allowed to come in to see me off before the big moment, we prayed, and then it was time to roll!

I remember being rolled into the operating room, which was literally right around the corner. I was told when the anesthesia was introduced. At first, I felt no change then they added more. I was out before I could finish telling them that I wasn’t sleepy…
